The iPhone camera is so good that most people accumulate tens of thousands of photos without trying. The catch is that iCloud Photos is a sync service, not a backup, and its "Optimize Storage" mode quietly removes local originals. Understanding that distinction is the first step to organizing without losing memories.

One: Sync, Not Backup

When iCloud Photos is on, every device shows the same library, and a delete on one deletes everywhere. If a photo is corrupted, overwritten, or deleted by mistake, that change propagates. A true backup keeps independent copies you can restore; iCloud sync does not. So before any big cleanup, make sure you have at least one other copy — a computer export or an alternative cloud — not just iCloud.
