Manage Subscriptions and Cancel Auto-Renewal Before It Drains You

2026-08-03 · Digital Life

Auto-renewal is designed around "continue by default": you may have wanted one month, but unless you actively cancel, it keeps charging. Since each charge is small and the notice inconspicuous, many people only notice at year-end reconciliation that they are still paying for a service they tried two years ago. This article covers three things: how to find all subscriptions, how to cancel across systems, and how to avoid the trap next time.

One: Inventory — Subscriptions Hide in Four Places

Most people remember only one or two subscriptions because charges are scattered. To find them all, check four channels:

1. App store iPhone: Settings → top avatar → Subscriptions. Android: Play Store → avatar → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. This shows everything bought via store in-app purchase — the easiest to miss.

2. Payment app auto-deduct agreements WeChat: Me → Services → Wallet → Payment settings → Deduct services. Alipay: Me → Settings → Payment settings → Silent payment / auto-deduct. This lists authorized auto-charge agreements — many utilities, memberships, and cloud storage live here.

3. Bank and credit card statements Export the last 12 months and sort by amount; find the same number repeating monthly or yearly. This catches overseas or web subscriptions the first two miss.

4. Email Search "renewal," "subscription," "receipt," "invoice," "charged." Receipt mail exposes services you forgot.

List what you find: service name, amount, cycle, next charge date, and where you signed up. The "where you signed up" column is the most important — it decides where to cancel.

Two: Cancel — "Cancel Where You Started"

The top misconception: people think clicking "delete account" in the app or uninstalling stops charges. It does not. The subscription lives in the payment channel, not the app.

By channel:

Store in-app purchase → back to the store's subscription page → cancel
WeChat / Alipay → deduct-services list → find entry → turn off service
Card via official site → log in to official site → account/subscription → cancel renewal
Carrier deduct → contact carrier support or cancel add-on in its app
